Acne treatment: How celebs & dermatologists get clear skin
If you’re looking for an acne treatment that works, you’re not alone.
Acne is the most common of skin diseases – affecting 85% of Americans between the ages of 12 and 24.
Many people experience emotional distress because of their acne.
Several studies show that acne can be linked to social isolation, self-consciousness, low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression.
Best acne treatment
Everyone wants to get rid of their acne as quickly as possible but the reality is treating acne takes time and patience.
In mild cases that may mean a week but for more severe forms of acne, it can take a few months.
Every patient responds to treatments differently, and sometimes it can get worse before it gets better.
But on the bright side, you’ll eventually get the desired result.
Dermatologist recommended acne treatment
Dr. Joshua Zeichner, the director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, revealed his simple secret.
Zeichner recently posted a photo of himself on his Instagram with a white blob on his face saying, “even the dermatologist gets a zit once in a while.”
Zeichner went on to break down his secret triple threat formula he was wearing: Mix equal parts salicylic acid 2%, hydrocortisone 1% cream, and benzoyl peroxide 2.5%-10% in your palm. Then apply the mixture to the spot.
Salicylic acid removes excess oil to dry out a pimple (white head), hydrocortisone reduces inflammation (cysts), and benzoyl peroxide kills acne-causing bacteria (blackheads or use it as a preventative treatment),” explains Zeichner.
Zeichner shows that expensive products aren’t always better. For his mixture of ingredients, he used the best drugstore acne treatment.
For salicylic acid, he used Clean & Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment ($6; target.com).
For hydrocortisone, he used CeraVe Hydrocortisone Anti-Itch Cream ($9; amazon.com).
And for benzoyl peroxide, he used Neutrogena Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Daily Leave-On Mask ($3; target.com).
Just don’t forget to mix together equal parts before applying!
Severe acne treatment
If you suffer from severe acne, your doctor may prescribe Aczone Gel for you.
Kate Bosworth told refinery29.com that she’s fought acne around her chin since she was a teenager.
She says the best acne treatment for teens is a prescription gel called Aczone.
Its active ingredient, dapsone, is proven to help with blackheads, whiteheads, and deeper painful pimples.
Bosworth also said she used it alongside a supplement containing evening primrose, which dermatologists say can reduce inflammation in the skin.
People with severe acne that does not respond to other medications are candidates for taking Accutane.
Accutane, or Isotretinoin, is one of the most powerful and effective methods of treating severe acne.
It’s especially good for cystic acne in women and body acne in men.
The powerful pills come with some nasty side effects, but for Chloë Grace Moretz, the end result was worth it.
The 21-year-old American model revealed to Allure in 2016 that she dealt with really bad cystic acne growing up.
Moretz described her quest for clear skin as a “long, hard, emotional process.” But her acne days are finally behind her, thanks to Accutane.
Fast acne treatment
A cortisone shot is a quick fix for acne emergencies. Go into the dermatologist’s office for a shot and acne will disappear in 24 to 48 hours.
The treatment works to curb inflammation, which makes it best for cystic breakouts and can be really good at combatting hormonal flare-ups.
Cortisone injections are the fastest, most fuss-free way to treat particularly nasty pimples.
You will start to notice an improvement four to eight hours after the injection.
Laser acne treatment
Laser treatment for acne is usually the last resort when all other treatments have failed.
Doctors use various types of lasers so a skin analyst will assess your scars to decide the treatment required.
All you need to do is lie on the bed, while the light is being applied to the affected areas.
The downside of acne laser treatment is that one session is never enough to remove a scar. Each session may cost up to $1000 USD and as many as 10 sessions may be needed.
Another downside is that certain skin types do not respond very well to laser treatment which means it could all be a waste of money!
However, one study showed that using laser treatment in addition to salicylic acid treatment could produce better results.
The study concluded that laser treatment may be beneficial if used in combination with salicylic acid.
PCOS acne treatment
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormone imbalance in teenage girls and women.
It’s a common condition that affects 12-18% of teens and young women. The most common symptoms are excess facial and body hair, irregular periods, weight gain, and acne.
Whether you like it or not, your diet is the number one cause of most of us PCOS acne.
If you follow these simple steps, you can clear your skin in six weeks.
Stop eating refined carbs (bread, white rice, crackers, cookies, pastries, pasta, breakfast cereals, etc).
Start eating healthy fats (fish, avocado, whole eggs, dark chocolate, coconut oil, olive oil, nuts/seeds, MCT oil, etc).
Include as many veggies as you can and start having probiotics. Probiotics, aka good gut bacteria, are ESSENTIAL for clear skin. Seriously, Don’t skip this!
Research has found that healthy people have different gut bacteria compared to people with health problems.
In other words, the right combination of gut bacteria plays a role in whether a person has clear skin or not.

Dietary changes alone aren’t enough to treat PCOS-related acne.
Exercise is also important as it increases blood circulation, reduces stress (which can cause acne), and prevents clogged pores.
Stop over-washing your face and don’t use fancy creams. Use toxin-free makeup only.
Organic acne treatment
At the time of writing this article, I use Rosehip seed oil. The essential fatty acids (Omega 3,6 and 9) in the oil help to keep the skin hydrated, moisturized and younger looking.
Rosehip seed oil can be found at most beauty stores.
You can also buy it online.
I use a USDA Certified Organic, 100% Pure, Cold Pressed, Unrefined Rosehip seed oil – the highest quality – by Kate Blanc.
Dead sea acne treatment
Dead Sea products are extremely effective as Acne treatment.
The Dead Sea, a saltwater lake located between Israel and Jordan, contains a boatload of minerals that are known to cure skin disorders.
Public reviews are promising with a 4.3 out of 5 rating from 647 reviews on Amazon.
Some of the testimonials below:
This soap has to be the best organic soap out there. The pimples on my back disappeared in 5 days. Try it and be amazed.
I have spent over a million, gazillion dollars on acne products. I even purchased the ultra expensive acne products by Philosophy. Didn’t work. With this soap, make a paste on your face and leave it on overnight. It will feel tight at first but after a couple of hours, the tightness will disappear. It has shea butter in it so don’t worry about your face being dry. When you wake, just wash and go. I think that my adult, chin acne has met it’s match. If this soap does not work for you, you may need to get an antibiotic from your doctor and start over.
Unfortunately, I haven’t had much luck finding dead sea mud soap at any stores around me.
If you can’t find any in your area, you can buy it online just like I do.
I use the 7 Ounce Bar, made in Jordan with Dead Sea minerals – the highest quality – from One With Nature.
Acne treatments can and do work, so don’t give up!
